Davis Architectural Group’s design for the Crossroads
Branch Library in Cambridge, Ohio is an innovative
solution that provides library patrons an experience that
exceeds the traditional library experience. The single level
floor plan is wide open making it very easy for the staff to
assist and interact with library patrons. The administration
wing is neatly tucked at one end and the public spaces
grouped together. The multipurpose room is a separate
entity to enhance public use and it is well connected to the
rest of the building.
DAG, when faced with substantial budget restraints,
efficiently provided solutions that condensed the program
requirements to form a great-looking functional space.
They coordinated efforts with Library Design Associates,
of Powell, Ohio, to create a bright and friendly interior
that is intuitively segmented by the use of color and
texture to make the library very easy to use.
The building’s exterior makes a bold statement utilizing
complimentary brick and masonry and multiple roof lines,
some of which are illusionary. It is situated in a way that
makes the most of the beautiful wooded setting and is
further enhanced by the use of benches and a patio creating
a nice, relaxing outdoor setting for families and individuals.
When the project was announced to the community, there
were initial concerns that it could increase the potential
for flooding the neighboring residences. “DAG handled
this very professionally when meeting with the residents.
DAG addressed their concerns and reassured them
the library would not affect them adversely,” said Carla
Hutchens, library director.
“Comments from patrons
are always positive.
They love the look.”
