Cooperative ingenuity. That’s what it took for Davis Architectural Group to come up with a design that effectively doubled the Cambridge Colgate-Palmolive Base Plant with one new building.

Davis Architectural Group worked closely with Colgate-Palmolive engineers and the Italian process engineering firm Ballestra to insure the high tech equipment would fit inside the limited space and operate properly. “The process line inside the building is a standard cookie cutter layout, but it didn’t fit the space we had available. So, DAG had to do a lot of creative thinking. We got all the equipment in here and it is very functional,” said Mike Mitchell, Plant Engineer.

Other challenges arose. Special foundations were
needed because of the weight of this new production line equipment combined with site geology. Overhead, FAA requirements for the nearby airport also affected the height of the building. From all sides, above and beneath, this project had its challenges. An existing tank farm also had to be expanded and modified while remaining operable. And, since this is a process plant, environmental concerns with storm drainage also had to be addressed along the way.

In addition to creativity and functionality, DAG has earned a high level of trust while working with Colgate-Palmolive’s project engineers over the years. The result was a project design that was completed on time and within budget. This solid working relationship has earned DAG additional work on other Colgate-Palmolive facilities in other states.

“We had buildings on two sides, railroad tracks on the other two plus FAA constraints overhead. In addition to that, we gave them all this equipment that barely fit within that three dimensional space. They were very creative in their use of space.”
